#WisdomWednesday: How Do You Care for a Human Hair Wig?

Proper care will extend the life of your human hair wig, keeping it looking fab and feeling fresh. How often you wash your human hair wig depends on how often you wear it. The general rule of thumb is every 8–12 wearings, or about once a month. For best results, we recommend that you bring any 100% human hair wig to your hairstylist for an initial styling. Follow these easy steps for washing, conditioning, drying, styling, and maintaining your human hair wig:

1. Wash

  • Using a wide-tooth comb, gently remove tangles and turn your human hair wig inside out.
  • Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water and add a capful of shampoo. Agitate the water with your hand to dissolve the shampoo and generate suds.
  • Submerge your wig in the sudsy water and soak it long enough for all the fibers to be saturated.
  • Find the front edge of the wig cap and–securely but gently–lift the wig out of the water and then resubmerge. Repeat this process several times, being careful not to scrub or wring the hair.
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, being sure not to tangle the hair.

2. Condition

  • Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water and add a capful of conditioner. Agitate the water with your hand to dissolve the conditioner.
  • Submerge your wig in the water and soak it long enough for all the fibers to be saturated.
  • Find the front edge of the wig cap and–securely but gently–lift the wig out of the water and then resubmerge. Repeat this process several times, being careful not to scrub or wring the hair.
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, being sure not to tangle the hair.

3. Dry

  • Turn the washed wig right-side out and move to a clean, dry towel and gently blot a few times. Do not rub, wring, or twist your wig.
  • Place the clean human hair wig on a wig stand made of wire or plastic. Avoid using a Styrofoam® styling head when the wig is still damp, as the cap may stretch.
  • Spritz the clean wig with leave-in wig conditioner.
  • Leave the wig to air-dry at room temperature overnight.

4. Style

  • Once your wig has air-dried thoroughly, use a wide-tooth comb to remove any tangles. Gently work from the ends of the hair up toward, but not all the way to, the roots. Be sure not to tug it too hard.
  • Use heat styling tools such as blow driers, flat irons, and curling irons on the lowest setting to help achieve your desired look. You may also use wig spray or wig gel to complete and hold the style.

5. Maintain

  • Always keep your own hair clean to reduce wig-washing frequency.
  • Always use specially formulated wig care products to extend the life of your human hair wig and to make the most of your investment.
  • Never use hot water when you clean or condition your human hair wig.
  • Never comb or brush your human hair wig all the way to the roots, as you may inadvertently loosen the fibers or damage the wig cap.
  • Never place a tangled human hair wig directly into water. Doing so will make the tangles worse.
  • Never rub shampoo or conditioner directly into the fibers or the cap of your human hair wig. Doing so will damage the fibers and saturate the cap with hard-to-remove residue.
  • Never rub, wring, or twist your human hair wig.
  • Always store your human hair wig out of direct sunlight and on a Styrofoam® styling head when not in use.
  • Always keep an extra wig on hand so that you have a fresh wig to wear during cleaning intervals.
